Kata’ib Hezbollah, one of the largest Iran-backed armed factions in Iraq, announced on September 20 that one of its senior commanders was killed in an Israeli strike that targeted the Syrian capital, Damascus.
In a statement, the faction said that the commander, Abu Haidar al-Khafaji, was killed earlier in the day while performing his duties as a security advisor in Syria.
“We, in Kata’ib Hezbollah, will continue to support the just causes of the nation, foremost among which is the cause of Palestine and holy Jerusalem,” the statement reads.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based pro-opposition monitoring group, reported that al-Khafaji was killed in an Israeli drone strike on the road leading to Damascus International Airport. These claims were not confirmed by official Syrian media.
Kata’ib Hezbollah is thought to be a key member of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions.
The group has been launching attacks against Israel as well as against United States forces in Iraq as and in neighboring Syria since the outbreak of Israel’s bloody war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip and Washington’s unwavering support for it.
On September 17 and 18, the IRI announced that it had attacked two “vital targets” in the northern Israeli city of Haifa with suicide drones. The group’s drones were reportedly intercepted over eastern Israel and neighboring Jordan. There were no losses.
While Israel has not openly responded to the IRI’s attacks yet, it was blamed for several strikes and sabotage attacks that targeted Iran-backed armed factions in both Syria and Iraq. The assassination of al-Khafaji will not likely be the last of these acts.
