Early on February 2, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched a series of strikes on the Palestinian Gaza Strip in response to a rocket attack.

The attack targeted Israeli settlements near the enclave on February 1 afternoon. At least one rocket was intercepted by the IDF Iron Dome system. The rockets were reportedly fired by a cell linked to the Nablus-based Lion’s Den in response to an Israeli crackdown on Palestinian prisoners. An Israeli woman was lightly wounded after slipping while running to a bomb shelter in the city of Sderot.

In a statement, the IDF said that its retaliatory strikes targeted a raw chemical material production site and a weapon manufacturing site of the Hamas Movement. Tel Aviv considers Hamas, which rules Gaza, responsible for any attack emanating from the strip regardless of whether the group was behind it.

According to Palestinian news sources, two positions of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, in the central and southern parts of Gaza were struck. No casualties were reported.

In response to the strikes, several rockets were fired from Gaza at nearby Israeli settlements. Moreover, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades said that its fighters targeted Israeli warplanes with anti-aircraft guns and missiles.

The IDF later confirmed that a total of 12 projectiles were fired from Gaza during the strikes, including anti-aircraft missiles. According to the military, 11 of the projectiles exploded in open areas in Israel or mid-air, and one rocket fell short in the strip.

Some of the rockets were reportedly fired by the National Resistance Brigades, the military wing of the left-winged Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Last week, Gaza experienced a similar limited confrontation after an IDF operation in the West Bank’s Jenin refugee camp that left ten Palestinians dead. Egypt is reportedly making efforts now to prevent any further escalation in the strip. This will not likely be possible without an Israeli de-escalation in the West Bank.
