Israel launched a violent attack against the Iranian capital, Tehran, on March 1, as the Islamic Republic expanded its retaliatory operations to Oman and attacked a tanker near the strategic Strait of Hormuz for the first time.
The Israeli Defense Forces said that it launched strikes “targets of the Iranian terror regime in the heart of Tehran,” after establishing air superiority over the city. It later shared footage showing strikes on what was described as a “headquarters of the Iranian terror regime” there.
Other videos released by the IDF show separate strikes against Iranian ballistic missile launchers, air defenses, drones and even fighter jets over the past day.
Defense Minister Israel Katz later revealed that the Israeli Air Force was striking Tehran with “stand-in” munitions, meaning those dropped directly over their targets.
“For the first time in Operation Roaring Lion, air force aircraft are operating in ‘stand-in’ over the skies of Tehran in a powerful strike against regime and repression targets,” Katz said.
The United States Central Command also released several videos over the past day showing strikes on “Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps command and control facilities, Iranian air defense capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and military airfields.”
Notably, one of the videos shows M142 HIMARS systems launching MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles at the Islamic Republic. These strikes were likely launched from Kuwait.
Overnight, Iran expanded its attacks against Israel and U.S. bases across the Middle East as news of the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei broke out.
Several waves of missile and drone strikes targeted Israel, with multiple impacts being reported. One wave in the early morning left a woman dead in the city of Tel Aviv. Dozens others were wounded. Unlike the war last June, Israel has so far refrained from providing any specific numbers.
Additional attacks were also reported in Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. Iran didn’t stop there, however, but also attacked Oman, which until very recently was playing the rule of mediators in talks with the U.S.
Oman’s Duqm commercial port was hit by two drones, injuring one expatriate worker, the state news agency reported. Debris from another drone fell in an area near fuel tanks, but there were no casualties or material losses recorded, it added.
Later, the country’s maritime security center reported that Palau-flagged oil tanker Skylight was attacked about five nautical miles off Oman’s Musandam. Four people are injured and the whole crew of 20 people is evacuated.
The attack is believed to be an attempt by Iran to forcefully close the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway is the world’s most vital oil export route, which connects the biggest Gulf oil producers, such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates, with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
Following the successful attack, Reuters reported that over 150 tankers stopped moving in international waters in the Persian Gulf.
Overall, it is clear now that the American-Israeli attack on Iran has sparked a regional conflict. The Islamic Republic’s retaliatory operations have reached almost every part of the region, from Oman to even Cyprus, where a British base was reportedly targeted.
More escalation is to be expected as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has vowed to punish the “murderers” of Khamenei. U.S. President Donald Trump from his side threatens to hit Iran with unprecedented force.
