Israeli strikes on October 22 put out of service war-torn Syria’s two main airports in Damascus and Aleppo, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported citing a military source.
“At around 5:25 am (0225 GMT), the Israeli enemy carried out… an air attack… targeting Damascus and Aleppo international airports,” the military source said in the statement published by the SANA.
The military source said the “simultaneous” strikes came “from the direction of the Mediterranean west of Latakia and from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan,” according to the statement.
According to the statement, one civilian worker was killed and another was wounded in the strike on Damascus International Airport.
Material damage to the airports’ runways “put them out of service,” the statement added. The transport ministry said flights were diverted to Latakia airport.
This was the third Israeli attack on Syria since the conflict between Israel and the Hamas Movement in the Gaza Strip began earlier this month. Aleppo International Airport was targeted by Israel on October 12 and 14, while Damascus International Airport was hit only on the 12th.
Israel has launched hundreds of strikes on Syria since the war in the country broke out more than a decade ago, with the attacks primarily targeting Iran-backed forces and weapons shipment for Lebanese Hezbollah as well as positions and equipment of the Syrian military.
Despite the ongoing war in Gaza, Syria refrained from directly responding to Israel’s recent strikes. However, Iranian-backed armed factions in Iraq did launch two attacks against United States bases in the northern and eastern regions of the country.

russia has its military airport in syria, but this reduces the capacity for russia to move in weapons via air. a lot of military actions that look like longer term early steps for a bigger conflict.
