On July 26, Israel’s Defense Minister Benny Gantz confirmed that the Russian military opened fire at Israeli fighter jets in May from an S-300 long-range air-defense system, at the end of an aerial attack that targeted a military research complex near the town of Masyaf in northwestern Syria.
The unprecedented incident was first reported by Israel’s Channel 13 news just a week after the attack, which took place on May 13.
“It was a one-off incident,” Gantz told a conference hosted by Channel 13, when asked to confirm the report. The Russian launch happened when the aircraft “were no longer around”, he said.
“Our jets weren’t even in the area,” Gantz added, confirming the original report which claimed the S-300 radar did not lock onto the Israeli fighters jets which were leaving the area, and thus did not pose a serious threat to the pilots.
Gants said that Israel’s coordination with Russia over Syria is “a situation that is stable right now”. However, he noted that Israel is always reviewing the incident.
The Israeli attack claimed the lives of five people, including three service members of Syria’s air defense forces, and wounded at least seven others.
Syria received three S-300PMU2 air-defense systems from Russia after the downing of a Russian Il-20 intelligence aircraft by Syrian air defense forces which were responding to an Israeli attack over Syrian airspace in September 2018. Russia blamed Israel for the incident.
In its report, Channel 13 argued that Syria’s S-300 systems are operated by the Russian military and cannot be fired without its approval.
The disclosure by Gantz came amid tensions between Israel and Russia. Tel Aviv insists on condemning the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, while Moscow is taking steps to stop the work of the Jewish Agency on its territory.
It’s nonsensical for Israel to say that the Syrians could not operate the system themselves, seeing as how Syria has operated the previous air defence systems since the 1960s. The Turks have never had an air defence system that worked before they bought the S400, is Israel saying that the Turks also require Russians to operate that system?
If Russia wanted to take down an Israeli aircraft, they would use their own S400 which they have at their bases in Syria and that would have been that. More girly bit Ching from the West.

The idea is that the defense system is operated and controlled by Russia, not that the Syrians are too incompetent to use it.
Russia operates the S400, while the Syrians were given S300. I have no doubt that Russia has influence and control over the Syrian system, but it is simply ludicrous to suggest that Syrian troops would not be allowed to operate it.
Otherwise, Russia would have sent more S400s, rather than expect their own troops to operate a lesser system. While Syria are not going to accept a system that their own troops never get experience of using.
Russia does not treat it’s allies like the US does, in return they get full co-operation with their allies. Now Israel realises that Syria can indeed track and target IDF aircraft without Russian personnel.

S-300 defence system in Syria are owned and operated by Russian military who decides on its own when to use it, and the firing linked to Israeli raid was not to hit IDF jet but just a warning to express its displeasure over Israel’s mischief. On the other hand, Turkey who purchased S-400s is entirely a different story having full control and operation of the system allowing them to shoot anything deemed hostile to its interest.

Israel is lying as usual. The Syrian Air Defense troops are more likely to have fired off a missile. I am also under the impression that Russia is using the S-400 systems around their airbases in Syria right now. It is a bummer that the Syrian’s didn’t blow the Israel threat out of the sky.
I fear that Russia is too restrained. Still, let Israel see that as their LAST warning. If this occurs at another time, Russia must down the jets. Fence sitters have no friends.
