On October 17, the Israeli Defense Forces claimed elimination of several military and political leaders of Hamas as a result of the strikes in the Gaza Strip.
The IDF announced the elimination of the commander of the central brigade of the Hamas combat wing, Ayman Nofal, as a result of the strikes. Earlier, Hamas confirmed the death of Ayman Nofal, one of the commanders of the Izz ed-Din al-Qassam Brigades. According to the IDF, Nofal was one of the most influential members of the movement and an intimate of the head of the military wing of Hamas, Mohammed Deif.

On the morning of October 17, the IDF claimed that elimination of Osama Mazini, the head of the council (shura) of the Palestinian Hamas group in the Gaza Strip. The operation aimed at his assassination was carried out by the IDF together with the ISA counterintelligence agency. According to the IDF, Osama Mazini was responsible for hostages taken by Hamas and led “terrorist activities against Israel.” Hamas is yet to confirm the death of its senior political leader.

Over the past night, the Israeli military claimed that it had struck more than 200 targets in the Gaza Strip. Among the targets are the headquarters of Hamas and a bank, which, according to Tel Aviv, was used by militants. Meanwhile, civilian casualties are growing and civilian infrastructure is ruined.
