The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on May 5 that it located and demolished “the main headquarters” of the former Syrian Arab Army (SAA) at the peak of Mount Hermon during recent operations in Syria.

The headquarters was raided by the 810th “Mountains” Regional Brigade, alongside combat engineers and paratroopers, the military said in a statement, adding that the facility included bunkers and numerous weapons, including artillery cannons, rockets and launchers, mortars, explosives, and mines.

The IDF invaded the buffer zone adjacent to the Golan Heights just hours after the fall of the Assad regime last December. It established nine strategic posts there, including two atop Mount Hermon. The military also launched hundreds of strikes against the country, destroying nearly all of the SAA’s combat capabilities.

Initially, the military described its presence in the buffer zone as a temporary and defensive measure. Nevertheless, Defense Minister Israel Katz later said that troops will remain deployed to nine army posts in the area “indefinitely.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in February that southern Syria must be completely demilitarized, warning that Israel would not accept the presence of the forces of the country’s new Islamist-led interim government close to its territory. The primer also warned the government against attacking the Druze religious minority, vowing to defend the minority.

Over the past week, the IDF launched one of its most intense waves of strikes against Syria since the start of the year in response to an attack by government forces on Druze fighters near Damascus.

One of the strikes even targeted the vicinity of the presidential palace in the Syrian capital, in what Israel said was a direct message to interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa.

Since the fall of the regime of former president Bashar al-Assad, the IDF has been steadily escalating against Syria with or without a reason. With no response from the government, Israel could move much deeper into the country once it was done with its war in the Gaza Strip.
