Israel destroyed hundreds of heavy engineering vehicles in a massive wave of strikes that targeted southern Lebanon, the heartland of Hezbollah, early on October 11.
In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that the strikes hit Hezbollah sites where the group was storing heavy machinery to use “for rebuilding its terror infrastructure in southern Lebanon.”
The IDF also accused Hezbollah of operating in a manner that poses “a threat to Lebanese civilians and uses them as human shields,” adding that the “location” of the heavy equipment and its operation by the group breached the ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States last November.
Israel has been targeting engineering vehicles in southern Lebanon to prevent reconstruction since the start of the ceasefire, destroying dozens in a single attack last September, but the scale of the latest strikes was for sure unprecedented.
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, more than ten separate strikes were carried out in the early morning, destroying some 300 vehicles, including bulldozers, excavators, and over 100 small Bobcat utility vehicles.
The country’s health ministry said that one of the strikes targeted al-Msayleh killing a man and wounding seven other people. The man was later identified as a Syrian national who was passing by in a van transporting fruits and vegetables.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned Israel for the deadly strikes, noting their timing after a deal to end the war in the Gaza Strip was reached.
The conflict in Lebanon broke out as a result of the war in Gaza. Hezbollah began launching cross-border attacks against the IDF just a day after the start of the war on October 7 of 2023 to back its ally Hamas.
“Once again, southern Lebanon has been the target of a heinous Israeli aggression against civilian installations — without justification or pretext,” Aoun said. “The seriousness of this latest attack lies in the fact that it comes after the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.”
Hezbollah also condemned the strikes calling on the government to react. The group, however, stopped short of vowing to respond.
“We affirm that this Israeli aggression cannot continue and must be confronted. The state must assume its national responsibilities toward its people and fulfill its role as protector, incubator, and sponsor,” the group said in a statement.
The Israel escalation against Lebanon is not surprising. With a deal on Gaza in place, the IDF now, for the first time since the start of the conflict, could completely focus on Hezbollah. The group is also facing serious pressure from the government to disarm.
The latest strikes brought Israel closer to renewing the war on Lebanon. The IDF has always favored going to war in the country in good weather conditions, thus the coming weeks could be decisive.
