The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on October 10 that its peacekeepers had been attacked by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) three times.
In a statement, the peacekeeping force said that “this morning, two peacekeepers were injured after an IDF Merkava tank fired its weapon toward an observation tower at UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqoura, directly hitting it and causing them to fall. The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital.”
It also accused the IDF of firing on UN position 1-31 in the town of Labbouneh, “hitting the entrance to the bunker where peacekeepers were sheltering, and damaging vehicles and a communications system. An IDF drone was observed flying inside the UN position up to the bunker entrance.”
A day earlier, according to UNIFIL, Israeli troops also “deliberately fired at and disabled the position’s perimeter-monitoring cameras. They also deliberately fired on UNP 1-32A in Ras Naqoura, where regular Tripartite meetings were held before the conflict began, damaging lighting and a relay station.”
Following the release of the UNIFIL statement, the Israeli ambassador to Italy was summoned by the country’s defense ministry, according to AFP.
The defense ministry of Italy, one of the main contributors to the UNIFIL, slammed the shooting at the headquarters of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon as “intolerable.”
“The shooting at the UNIFIL headquarters” and other incidents involving “small arms fire” are “intolerable, they must be carefully and decisively avoided. For these reasons, I protested to my Israeli counterpart and the Israeli ambassador to Italy,” Minister Guido Crosetto said in a statement.
Irland, another key UNIFIL contributor, also slammed the IDF attacks. Taoiseach Simon Harris said he was deeply concerned by the UN peacekeepers statement and sent solidarity to the injured personnel.
“Firing on peacekeepers can never be tolerated or acceptable. The Blue Helmet worn by UN peacekeepers must be sacrosanct,” Harris said. “They are serving on behalf of the international community in some of the most challenging places in the world. They are not combatants, and their role must be respected at all times.”
This was not the first time UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon have come under Israeli fire since the clashes between the IDF and Hezbollah broke out last October in the backdrop of the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip. However, previous incidents were not as serious.
After escalating its strikes and launching a ground operation in southern Lebanon last month, the IDF began to pressure the UNIFIL, moving its troops right next to the peacekeepers positions and even ordering them to evacuate.
It’s worth noting that the confrontation has so far claimed the lives of more than 2,141 people in Lebanon and 62 others in Israel and Israeli-occupied territories.
