The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has apparently begun to target “Axis of Resistance” commanders in Lebanon responsible for operations in neighboring Syria.

On August 6 ,the military announced that a strike killed an operative of Hezbollah linked to Syria in Lebanon’s northeastern Beqaa Valley a day earlier.

The operative, Hassam Qassem Gharab, was directing from Lebanon “terror cells” in Syria to launch rockets at the Golan Heights in northern Israel, the IDF said in a brief statement, adding that his activities “posed a threat to the State of Israel and its citizens.”

The IDF announced another assassination in Lebanon on August 8, this time, however, targeting a Palestinian commander.

In a statement, the military said a strike that hit Lebanon’s eastern Beqaa Valley a day earlier killed Mohammed Wishah, a senior terror operative in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

Lebanon’s health ministry said that six people were killed and ten others were wounded in the strike, which took place close to a border crossing with Syria.

Wishah served as the head of the group’s Military-Security Department in Syria and assumed the role after his predecessor, Shantal al-Al, was killed in a strike in Beirut in September 2024, according to the IDF.

The commander was responsible for “coordinating with other Palestinian terror organizations, strengthening ties and coordination with the Shiite axis, and recently operated to advance military operations against Israeli targets,” the military added.

Following the fall of the regime of former president Bashar al-Assad, Israel invaded the buffer zone adjacent to the Golan Heights in southern Syria and launched hundreds of strikes, destroying much of the country’s military capabilities. Still, it faced very little problems on its front with the country.

In March, there was a clash with local gunmen in southern Syria. Later in June and July, two rocket attacks targeted the Golan Heights, with shadowy groups linked to the Axis of Resistance, an informal coalition of Iranian-supported armed and political organizations, claiming responsibility.

The IDF is now apparently taking advantage of its ability to attack targets in Lebanon while Hezbollah is deterred from eradicating any threat related to its front with Syria.
