Israel is preparing to attack Iranian energy facilities but is awaiting a green light from the United States, a senior Israeli defense official told Reuters on April 4.
The unnamed official added that any Israeli attacks on such facilities in the Islamic Republic would likely come within the next week.
Israel has already carried out several attacks against energy facilities in Iran, and has even targeted industrial targets, hitting steel and pharmaceutical factories.
The comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump issued a new 48-hour ultimatum, hinting that Washington would back further Israeli military action against Iran.
“Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out – 48 hours before all hell will reign (sic) down on them,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Glory be to GOD!”
Shortly after the start of the American-Israeli war on Iran, the IRGC warned that any ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz would be attacked, and the waterway — where roughly 20% of the world’s oil production passes daily — has effectively been closed since then, with as many as 29 vessels hit by Iranian fire.
Trump has been repeatedly threatening to bomb Iran’s energy facilities since the start of the war more than a month ago, while also at the same time seeking a diplomatic arrangement to end the war.
He has claimed that the new Iranian decision makers who rose to power after U.S. and Israeli strikes killed dozens of top officials are more reasonable and willing to make a deal. However, efforts to mediate a ceasefire, or even just to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Any further attacks on energy facilities in Iran will likely provoke a fierce response from the Islamic Republic, who has already demonstrated its ability and willingness to respond, not just against energy facilities in Israel, but also against U.S. investments in the sector in neighboring Gulf countries. This would heavily impact Global energy markets.
