The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on October 6 that it had launched a ground operation in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
The main target of the new operation, which is being led by the 162nd Division, is the Jabaliya refugee camp. The military said that the division’s 401st and 460th armored brigades encircled Jabaliya overnight, and troops are currently operating in the camp.
The operation comes after the IDF said that it had collected intelligence of fighters and infrastructure of the Hamas Movement in Jabaliya, alongside efforts by the group to re-establish itself there.
According to the military, a wave of airstrikes and artillery shelling, targeting dozens of Hamas sites in Jabaliya, including weapon depots, tunnels, cells of fighters, and other infrastructure as troops entered the camp.
“The operation will continue as long as necessary, while systematically striking and thoroughly destroying the terror infrastructure in the area,” the IDF said in a statement.
Arab media reported that the IDF is currently facing fierce resistance from Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in Jabaliya.
Earlier, the IDF announced that it was expanding the size of the Israeli-designated “humanitarian zone” in southern Gaza, as it prepares to expel civilians from the entire north of the Strip.
The military published maps for Palestinian civilians “highlighting potential evacuation areas in northern Gaza, including ‘block zones’ that correspond to neighborhoods and regions.” Some 200,000 Palestinians have been estimated to remain in northern Gaza under intense Israeli strikes.
The latest strikes on Gaza claimed the lives of 45 people and left more than 256 others wounded, according to the health ministry in the Strip.
The latest losses brought the death toll from the bloody Israeli war on Gaza to 41,870. More than 97,166 have been wounded in the nearly year-long war. Women and children make up most of the causalities.
Despite killing tens of thousands of Palestinians and destroying most of Gaza, Israel is yet to fulfill any of the war’s stated goals. Hamas is still ruling the Strip, the group is still very capable militarily and it continues to hold around a hundred Israeli hostages who were captured during the October 7 surprise attack.
The new ground operation in Gaza comes as Israel is escalating its war against Hezbollah Lebanon, stepping up its strikes on Syria and preparing to launch an attack on Iran in response to the October 1 missile attack.
