Israel has ordered all Palestinian living in the northern Gaza Strip to evacuate within 24 hours, the United Nations said on October 12.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told Axios, CNN, and The New York Times that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) gave its evacuation recommendation to the organization just before midnight, local time.
The UN was informed that “the entire population of Gaza north of Wadi Gaza should relocate to southern Gaza within the next 24 hours,” the spokesman said.
Around 1.1 million people live in the area that the IDF has called to evacuate, according to the spokesman, who noted that the same order applies to all UN staff as well as those sheltered in UN facilities, including schools, health centers, and clinics
If such an order is confirmed, the UN “strongly appeals” for it to be rescinded, concerned that it “could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation,” Dujarric said.
“The United Nations considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences,” the spokesman added.
The IDF later released a statement confirming that the evacuation order was given. However, the statement did not specify a 24-hour deadline.
“Civilians of Gaza City, evacuate south for your own safety and the safety of your families and distance yourself from Hamas terrorists who are using you as human shields,” the announcement said.
“In the following days, the IDF will continue to operate significantly in Gaza City and make extensive efforts to avoid harming civilians,” it added, specifying that civilians should move to the area south of the Wadi Gaza.”
The evacuation order indicates that the IDF, which mobilized more than 300,000 troops in recent days, is gearing up to launch a large-scale ground offensive against the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in Gaza.
At least 1,300 Israelis were killed and more than 3,000 others were wounded in a surprise attack launched by Hamas and its allies from Gaza on October 7. The IDF has been bombarding the Strip since then.
The IDF said on October 12 that it had dropped 6,000 bombs on Gaza over the last six days. At least 1,537 Palestinians have been killed, while 6,612 others were wounded by Israeli strikes since October 7, the Palestinian Health Ministry said on the same day.
The Israeli evacuation order is nearly impossible to implement considering that it includes nearly half the population of highly-dense Gaza. The order will worsen the humanitarian catastrophe in the Strip, which was placed under a complete blockade just a few days after the outbreak of the war.
