On October 26, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a surprise visit to the Sultanate of Oman and discussed the peace process in the region with Omani Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, according to the Omani News Agency (ONA).
“Among the issues discussed were ways to advance the peace process in the Middle East as well as several matters of joint interest regarding the achievement of peace and stability in the Middle East,” the two countries said in a joint short statement.
The Times of Israel revealed that the Israeli prime minister was invited to Oman by the sultan himself. Netanyahu was reportedly accompanied by Mossad Director Yossi Cohen, National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat, Foreign Ministry Director-General Yuval Rotem, the head of the Prime Minister’s staff, Yigal Horowitz, and the Prime Minister’s Military Secretary, Brig.-Gen. Avi Bluth.
The first visit of a senior Israeli official to Oman occurred in 1994, when Israeli’s Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin visited the Gulf state. Two years later, the town countries signed an agreement on the reciprocal opening of trade representative offices.
The Israeli-Omani relation witnessed a setback following the Second Palestinian Intifada in October 2000. However, the relations began to recover in 2008 when Oman’s Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah met with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni during their visit to Qatar.
Despite that both countries stated that Netanyahu’s visit was aimed at discussing the peace initiative in the Middle East, some experts say that the Sultanate is playing a role in easing the tension between Iran, its close partner, and Israel. According to this version, Oman is playing a role of a mediator in the indirect negotiations between Iran and Israel.
Allowing Israel to continue to exist in the middle east is the antithesis of peace. The Yinon plan is clearly the cornerstone of Zionist expansionist foreign policy in which there will be no peace for as long as Israel exists, which is why it shouldn’t be allowed to continue. It was the biggest mistake that the UN ever made and should be corrected by revoking Israel’s UN membership and replacing it with a unified Palestine as part of dejudifying Palestine and our planet.

Sultan Qaboos ousted his own father from the throne. It was the UK who supported the violent regime change in the 70’s if my memory is correct. He cannot be trusted.

Bloodless or not, the British SAS were involved in a bloody war against the ‘Adoo ‘ (Enemy) who mainly occupied a large escarpment in Oman. Twas there that a Fijian SAS trooper continued to fire a 25 pounder over open sights when the others in the gun crew were killed.
The British forces have provided the backbone of the Omani army ever since, with many UK personnel being seconded to Oman or being directly employed as mercenaries there. A past acquaintance of mine is an ex Royal Marine Commando who commended the Omani Motor Pool for a few yearsin the 70’s.
The only war that Oman has been involved in recently is that one on their own territories. Which is a contributing factor to how quickly the standard of living was improved. Plus with a population of only 4 million. A little oil money goes a long way. If previous administrations hadn’t been so backward, the population would be much higher.
The current military is basically a national guard that would be outgunned by it’s neighbors or a foreign invasion from afar. They’ve traded their strategic position on the straight for British basing and protection without getting embroiled in regional conflicts. Which has served them well.
Oman in fact did mediate between Iran and the US, UK before. There was even a couple of face-to-face meetings without presence of Omani mediators in Muscat. That’s true, but I find it strange that Oman plays a role in a possible Iran-Israel talks, mediation between Israel and other Muslim countries is a Jordanian specialty.
OTOH, the return (southern) lane of the Hormuz strait is in Oman’s waters, if Iran decided to exercise it’s right to close it’s territorial waters to hostiles. They probably want to make sure of Oman’s neutrality or permission for their subs.
I’d say this talks is definitely NOT for peace.
What possible negotiation leverage does Israel have against Iran? Israel is surrounded not Iran, Israel lost its war in Syria, Israel doesn’t have a good counter against Hezbollah, and Iran is still in Syria.
Seems like an excercise in futility on part of the Israelis. The subs are a good point though. But knowing the Isrealis, they’d probably not even ask for permission and move their measly 5 subs (lol) close to Iranian waters.
They don’t have any leverage directly, but indirectly I can think of 2:
– They can promise a change in behaviour of the US and are able to deliver.,
– Their knife under Gaza throat. They can’t ask Iran for anything by threatening to destroy Gaza, Iran won’t oblige against the threat but may be willing to do a small favour for easing the conditions on Gaza.
Subs can’t pass the straits undetected. It’s too narrow and too shallow for that, but they may pass, still detected but being escorted by legitimate vessels, like an Omani one.
Nuclear missiles is what makes their subs dangerous.
Fair point about the missiles and the straight but the US part is a little iffy (and this is coming from an American).
I don’t wanna day this but the US is quite literraly falling apart at the seams. With an increasingly stratified internal populace and political turmoil across the board. It’s hard to imagine the US pushing anything against Iran. If Russia, China and the EU can set up a meaningful alternative to Swift with the supposed mechanism that will allow trade with Iran while avoiding US sanctions then Isreals leverage through the US is greatly mitigated.
But on the Israeli subs and their nukes are a concern. Yet I don’t know how that would concern Iran all that much. Iran doesn’t have nukes and launching a nuclear strike against Iran will only spur Iran to rapidly push to obtain nukes regardless of what anyone says or does.
The range of the SLBM nukes are not as great as the Russian, British & Americans as the Dolphin submarines are not very big in size…..but still effective They probably have a range of 1500 to 2000 miles ….so are mid-range nukes.
