On December 28, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that its air defense had shot down a drone that was launched from Lebanon.
The interceptor missiles set off sirens in the suburbs of Krayot settlement, near the northern Israeli city of Haifa, but no rockets were launched toward Israel at the time. The IDF didn’t clarify if the downed drone was armed or just on a reconnaissance mission.
Shortly after the interception, suspected drone infiltration sirens sounded in the Upper Galilee, near the Lebanon border. The alerts were activated in the settlements of Iftah, Malkia, Hermon Regional Council, Ramot Naftali and Dishon, among others. No interceptions were announced by the IDF however.
Later, a salvo of some 20 rockets hit the northern city of Kiryat Shmona. Damage was reported in several parts of the city. The IDF said that the rockets were launched from Lebanon.
Hezbollah didn’t claim responsibility for the drone infiltration or the rocket attack. However, the group said its fighters shelled the al-Samaqa military site and targeted the Honin barracks along with a nearby gathering of Israeli troops on the border with Israel.
The attacks were carried out “to support the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their brave and honorable resistance,” three separate statements released by Hezbollah said.
Lebanese media reported earlier several Israeli airstrikes on the town of Ramya, Aitaroun and Aaita al-Shaab in southern Lebanon. The airstrikes resulted in heavy damage. However, there were no causalities.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in Gaza, with Hezbollah and its allies carrying out attacks in support of the Strip.
As of December 28, the border clashes have resulted in four civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of nine IDF soldiers. On the Lebanese side, more than 150 have been killed. The toll includes 120 Hezbollah members, ten of whom were killed in Syria, 16 Palestinian fighters, at least 19 civilians and three journalists.
