Late on September 22, the Israeli Defense Forces carried out strikes against the Gaza Strip in response to the launch of incendiary balloons by Palestinian protesters.
The arson attack started three fires in the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel. All fires were put down by the Firefighters from Fire and Rescue Services and the Jewish National Fund. No casualties were reported. This was the first attack with incendiary balloons in more than two years.
The balloons were launched by Palestinians who have been protesting near Gaza’s separation fence for around a week. There have been several other protests in recent weeks.
In response to the arson attack and the protests, the IDF said it had carried out drone strikes against two observation posts belonging to the Hamas Movement, the de-facto ruler of the Gaza Strip. The incendiary balloons were launched from the area of the two posts, the military alleged.
A third post was shelled by a tank after a Palestinian gunman opened fire at troops on the border amid the protests, the IDF said, adding that the post was located near where the gunman opened fire.
The strikes didn’t result in any casualties. However, the Hamas-run health ministry in the Gaza Strip reported that 26 were wounded by Israeli fire amid the protests.
Hamas is allowing the protests to draw attention to the worsening living conditions in the impoverished coastal strip after Qatar, one of the biggest donors of the movement, has cut back on monthly disbursements. In response, Israel tightened the blockade on the strip by closing the Erez crossing.
