Early on April 21, the Israeli Defense Forces carried out a series of strikes on the Palestinian Gaza Strip in response to a rocket attack.
The rocket attack targeted southern Israeli city of Sderot. A single rocket that was launched from Gaza landed near the city causing material losses only. The attack was likely carried out in response to the strict security measures Israeli authorities recently imposed on the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.
No group claimed responsibility for the rocket attack. However, the IDF held the Hamas Movement, the de-facto ruler of Gaza, responsible.
“We hold Hamas responsible for all terrorist activities emanating from Gaza,” the military said on Twitter.
According to the IDF, the strikes targeted an underground complex used to produce rocket engines, a Hamas launch compound and an anti-aircraft missile storage facility. Palestinian sources didn’t report any casualties as a result of the strikes.
During the strikes, Palestinian armed faction opened fire at Israeli fighter jets, attack helicopters and drones with heavy machine guns. The Iron Dome air-defense system mistook the machine gun fire for a salvo of rockets. The system launched a number of interceptors as a result. Initially, the IDF falsely claimed that four rockets were intercepted over Sderot.
A few hours after the Israeli strikes, another rocket was launched from Gaza. However, it fell short within the enclave’s territory.
This was the second such confrontation in less than a week. On April 18, the IDF carried out a series of strikes on Gaza in response to a similar rocket attack. Back then, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, targeted an Israeli fighter jet with a 9K32 Strela-2 man-portable air-defense system.
The Hamas Movement and several other factions in the Gaza Strip have already warned Israel against harassing Palestinians in Jerusalem and the West Bank. Israel ignored these warnings and stepped up its security measures in both areas. Israeli security forces killed 18 Palestinians in the first half of April.
Now, the risk of a new military confrontation between the IDF and Gaza’s armed factions is very real. Further escalation is to be expected.
