Israel Struck Syrian Army Depots With EXTRA Precision-Guided Rockets

IMI SYSTEMS, A ground-launched EXTRA system.

The Israeli military used EXTRA [Extended Range Artillery] precision-guided rockets to attack depots of the Syrian Arab Army 7th Division near the town of Zakyah to the south of the capital, Damascus, on February 16, Syrian and Russian sources revealed.

A photo showing the debris from one of the Israeli EXTRA rockets which were used in the attack surfaced online on February 17.

The EXTRA artillery rocket system was developed and manufactured by Israel’s defense giant IMI Systems. The system is built around a 306 mm artillery rocket with a maximum range of 150 kilometers.

The rocket uses a global navigation satellite system backed by an inertial navigation system to reach a CEP [Circular Error Probable] of less than 10 meters.

Usually, the Israeli military utilizes its air force to attack targets in Syria. It is unclear why precision-guided ground-to-ground rockets were used on February 16. One possible reason is to avoid Syrian air defense fire.

More information on the February 16 Israeli attack on Syria will likely emerge in the upcoming days. New satellite images could provide a look at what was exactly struck south of Damascus.
