The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Defense Ministry announced on October 22 that they will evacuate another 14 settlements close to the Lebanese border, amid repeated attacks by Hezbollah and allied Palestinian factions in the last two weeks.
The residents will be taken to state-funded guesthouses after the plan was approved by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, the ministry’s National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) said in a statement.
Last week, NEMA began to evacuate 28 settlements that are within two kilometers of Lebanon, as well as the northern city of Kiryat Shmona.
Hezbollah attacked five sites of the IDF in the occupied Shebaa Farms and Kfarchouba Hills a day earlier. In one attack, the group’s fighters hit a Humvee armored vehicle and Merkava main battle tank, and in another a gathering of Israeli troops was targeted.
In addition, the Fajr Forces, the armed wing of the Lebanese Islamic Group, said that its fighters fired rockets at several Israeli settlements.
The attacks wounded two Thai workers and three soldiers of the IDF, one of them is said to be in a life threatening condition.
The IDF responded to the attacks with artillery strikes and a series of drone strikes that hit targets several kilometers behind the front. Hezbollah mourned six of its fighters during the day. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad also announced that one of its Syria’s branch fighters was killed in southern Lebanon.
As of October 22, the clashes have claimed the lives of seven Israelis -six soldiers and one civilian- 19 fighters of Hezbollah, six Palestinian fighters -three from the Hamas Movement and three from the Islamic Jihad- and four Lebanese civilians -two elderly men and two journalists-.
The number of Israeli casualties could be much higher, but the IDF’s strict censorship makes any reports of casualties impossible to verify.
Hezbollah will likely step up its attack on the Lebanon front in upcoming days in response to recent deadly Israeli strikes. The confrontation could escalate into an open war, if the IDF launches a ground invasion into Gaza.
