On May 12, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, attacked an Israeli natural gas platform off the coast of the Gaza Strip.
In a statement, the Palestinian armed faction said the naval platform was targeted with a “barrage of rockets,” without providing any additional information.
After the attack, a spokesman for oil producer Chevron told Reuters that the company had shut down and depressurized the Tamar natural gas platform after receiving instructions from the Israeli Ministry of Energy.
The ministry told the Times of Israel that there is “no connection” between the decision to shut the platform and what it called the “completely untrue” reports of attempts to attack it.
The bold rocket attack came amid a heated battle between Gaza factions and the Israeli military. Earlier, a strike by the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades killed an Israeli soldier and wounded two others. The Israeli military also announced the elimination of several commanders of Hamas.
Israeli strikes on Gaza are yet to stop. On May 12, at least three buildings in Gaza city were wiped out. The last building, known as al-Shuruq Tower, collapsed after receiving multiple strikes from combat drones and fighter jets.

A day earlier, Palestinian factions warned Israel that it will respond to strikes on Gaza towers with rocket attacks on Tel Aviv and its outskirts. Over 100 rockets were indeed launched after strikes on a tower similar to al-Shuruq. Despite this, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said that “buildings will continue to crumble” in Gaza.
