The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged on October 11 that another soldier was killed while fighting in the southern Gaza Strip.
The slain soldier, who held the rank of Staff Sergeant, was serving as a tank commander in the 46th Armored Battalion of the 401st Brigade, according to the military.
While the IDF didn’t provide any details on where or how the soldier was killed, the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, announced later that its fighters had targeted a Merkava main battle tank and a Caterpillar D9 armored bulldozer near the city of Rafah in southern Gaza with locally-made Al-Yassin 105 rocket-propelled grenades.
The tank commander was the fourth Israeli soldier to be killed in Gaza in less than 24 hours. Just a day earlier, three soldiers from the 5460th support unit of the 460th Brigade were killed in clashes with fighters from Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in the Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern part of the Strip.
The latest deaths brought Israel’s toll in the ground operations against Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in Gaza and along its border to 354. More than 2,280 others have been reportedly wounded. In addition, over 500 vehicles were hit in the Strip, according to Hebrew media.
On the Palestinian side, the death toll from the Israeli war has exceeded 42,000, with women and children making up most of the casualties.
Despite killing tens of thousands of Palestinians and destroying most of Gaza, Israel is yet to fulfill any of the war’s stated goals. Hamas is still ruling the Strip, its military wing is still operating and it continues to hold around a hundred Israeli hostages who were captured during the October 7 surprise attack.
