Another Israeli strike targeted southern Lebanon, the heartland of Hezbollah, on April 6, causing casualties and material losses.
The strike targeted two members of Hezbollah who were “operating an engineering vehicle” close to the town of Zibqin, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said in a brief statement, adding that the two were “attempting to restore terrorist infrastructure.”
Lebanese media confirmed that a bulldozer and a nearby vehicle were hit between Zibqin and the nearby town of Chaaitiyeh, saying that two people were killed.
Ironically, it was reported around the same time that an armored bulldozer of the IDF advanced into southern Lebanon under the protection of a Merkava main battle tank. The bulldozer reportedly built tranches in the area of Birkat al-Naqar to the south of the town of Chebaa.
More than 13 months ago, Hezbollah embarked on a confrontation with the IDF in response to the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip. After taking heavy losses, the group agreed to a ceasefire last November.
The ceasefire, which was brokered by the United States, was supposed to end all clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border by February 18. However, the Israeli military continued to launch strikes against Hezbollah. It also deployed troops at five strategic posts in southern Lebanon.
While Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem warned in a recent speech that the group could soon respond to Israeli violations of the ceasefire, the group will not likely act on this warning.
In addition to the heavy blow it took during the last confrontation with the IDF, the group also lost all of its main supply lines with the fall of the Assad regime in neighboring Syria. Furthermore, internal and external pressure on the group has rarely been this high.
