The cell that was targeted by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on the separation line with Syria in the Golan Heights on August 2 was linked to Iran, Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, Chief of General Staff of the IDF, announced on August 9.
Lt. Gen. Kochavi revealed the information in a meeting with soldiers from Unit 212, “Sayeret Maglan,” which uncovered the cell and prevented it from planting explosive devices on the separation line.
“You have foiled a cell that worked upon Iranian orders and was a part of the radical axis’ positioning in Syria,” the commander said, without providing any further details on the cell.
In his speech, Lt. Gen. Kochavi set the Israeli goals in what he called the “battle between wars” as follows:
- The Iranian nuclear program.
- Preventing the “radical axis” [Iran and its allies] from establishing a presence in Syria.
- Denying Israel’s enemies on all fronts, especially in the north, from obtaining precision-guided missiles and munitions.
IDF troops in northern Israel have been on high-alert since July 20, when a series of Israeli strikes on the Syrian capital, Damascus, killed a fighter of Lebanon’s Hezbollah. The group always respond to such incidents. ‘
Kochavi’s claims about the alleged cells are yet to be verified. However, his speech reveals that Israel is still determined to confront Iran and its allies, despite its limited success.
