Israeli Army Detained Syrian Who Infiltrated Occupied Golan Heights

On October 6, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it had detained a Syrian man who infiltrated the occupied part of the Syrian Golan Heights.

A spokesman for the army said that the man was detained after advancing a few dozen meters towards Mount Hermon in the Israeli-occupied part of the region.

“An army observation point spotted the suspect, near the ceasefire line. Immediately, army forces were sent to the area, and he was arrested and handed over to the security services for investigation,” the spokesman was quoted as saying by several Arab news outlets.

The initial assessment indicateS that the man is just a civilian who wanted to cross into the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights on the hope of landing a job in one of the Syrian towns and villages there. The identity of the man is yet to be revealed.

The IDF has been keeping a close eye on the frontline in the Golan Heights out of worries that Lebanese Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed groups may be planning to launch attacks from the Syrian side.

On September 19, the IDF opened fire at four suspects who hurled objects along the ceasefire line in the Golan Heights. Israeli troops crossed the line and captured one of the suspects, who was wounded.

The army claimed later that the suspects were planting anti-personnel mines along the ceasefire line. However, these claims were refuted by several sources in the southern Syrian governorate of al-Quneitra, who said that the four men were just collecting firewood.

While the situation in the Golan Heights remains tenses, a serious military escalation on the front is unlikely to happen any time soon.

Where the Israelis have no right to be in the first place. That is Syrian land and the Syrians should be “detaining” Jews who are trespassing and infesting the land.
