The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on April 24 that its fighter jets and artillery forces carried out a wave of strikes against dozens of Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.
Some 40 targets in the town of Ayta al-Shaab were hit by air and artillery strikes within several minutes, the IDF said in a statement, adding that the targets included weapon depots and other assets belonging to Hezbollah.
The IDF noted that the intense strikes were “part of the effort to destroy the organization’s infrastructure in the border area.”
Ayta al-Shaab is used by Hezbollah for “terror” and it places dozens of its sites in the area, the IDF claimed in its statement.
Lebanese media said that the Israeli strikes didn’t only target Ayta al-Shaab, but also the nearby towns of Ramyeh and Alma al-Shaab. There were no reports of civilian or military casualties, however.
The strikes came amid a series of attacks by Hezbollah against Israel. In separate statements, the group said its fighters fired dozens of Katyusha rockets at the settlement of Shomera, shelled the Rahib military site with artillery, targeted a house occupied by Israeli troops in the settlement of Avivm and struck gatherings of the IDF in the border area of Harsh Natawa.
The attacks were carried out in support of the Palestinian people and resistance in the Gaza Strip as well as in response to Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, Hezbollah said.
Hebrew media reported damage and material losses in both Shomera and Avivim. Nevertheless, there were no reports of any casualties.
The intense Israeli strike and Hezbollah’s attacks marked the 200 days since the clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border broke out on the backdrop of the war on Gaza.
So far, the border clashes have resulted in eight civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 11 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 400 people have been killed, including 269 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 70 civilians.
