The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on December 29 that it is “expanding operation” against the Hamas Movement in the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.
In a statement, the IDF said that soldiers of the Paratroopers Brigade spotted a Hamas fighter coming out of a tunnel shaft with a rocket-propelled grenade, and in response threw grenades at him and into the tunnel in one incident. The paratroopers also identified Hamas fighters inside a building and directed tank shelling against them.
Also in Khan Younis, troops of the 7th Armored Brigade identified a Hamas fighter some 100 meters from them, and directed a drone strike against him, the IDF said. In another incident, the soldiers identified a group of Hamas fighters in a building and directed a fighter jet to carry out a strike.
Meanwhile in northern Gaza, the IDF said that the 460th Armored Brigade killed dozens of Hamas fighters in a number of battles, including with airstrikes, sniper fire, machine gun fire, and tank shelling.
In one incident, an aircraft identified a Hamas fighter armed with a rocket-propelled grenade running toward the troops, who opened fire and killed him.
The 261st Brigade also searched the home of a Hamas fighter in the Jabaliya refugee camp, locating weaponry and official documents, according to the IDF.
The IDF announced in another statement that it killed numerous Hamas fighters and destroyed infrastructure of the group in the course of its operation in the town of Khirbat Ikhzaa, which is located on the outskirts of Khan Younis. The operation began two days earlier.

Separately, videos posted to social media showed Israeli troops insulting and humiliating dozens of Palestinians in northern Gaza, including young children, who were detained and forced to take off most of their clothes.
It’s worth noting that the Palestinian death toll from Israeli attacks on Gaza has surged to 21,507, according to the latest update by the Hamas-run health ministry in the Strip. Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said that 55,915 other people had been wounded in the Israeli onslaught.
At least 187 people were killed and 312 others wounded in the last 24 hours, according to al-Qudra. Video footage from the Strip showed dead and wounded civilians, including children and elderly.
Israel’s attempts to expand ground operations in Gaza will definitely hinder the ongoing indirect talks with Hamas. A new ceasefire in the Strip remains unlikely.
