On November 11, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) advanced deeper in Gaza City despite facing fierce resistance from the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli troops were reportedly at one point within view of al-Shifa Hospital, where the IDF alleges that the military command of Hamas is hiding.
Thousands of civilians had been sheltering in al-Shifa hospital in recent weeks, but many fled in recent days as Israeli troops closed in. Abdallah Nasser, who lives near Shifa, told the Associated Press by phone that the IDF was advancing deep into Gaza City from its southern and northern flanks.
“They are facing stiff resistance, but they are advancing,” he says.
Meanwhile, Mohammed al-Masri, one of many still sheltering at the hospital, said that from a higher floor, he could see Israeli troops approaching from the west. “They are here,” he said. “They are visible.”
Commenting on the ongoing battle in Gaza City, Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, said that its fighters had destroyed six vehicles of the IDF during the day. It also released footage showing an attack with a rocket-propelled grenade against Israeli troops in the city of Beit Hanon.
The al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, also announced that its fighters were clashing with Israeli troops in Tal al-Hawa, al-Shati Camp, al-Nasr neighborhood as well as in the vicinity of al-Shifa Hospital.
From its side, the IDF announced that it had killed a Hamas commander who “held hostage approximately 1,000 Gazan residents at Rantisi Hospital.”
The IDF said in a statement that following intelligence gathered by the Shin Bet and Military Intelligence Directorate, troops of the Givati Brigade directed a fighter jet to strike Ahmed Siam, the commander of Hamas’s Nasser-Radwan company.
Earlier this week, the IDF alleged that Siam was preventing some 1,000 Palestinians from evacuating Rantisi Hospital, which is located in northern Gaza.
Salim was killed at the al-Buraq school in Gaza City, along with other Hamas fighters under his command, the IDF alleged, without addressing the reported death of some 20 civilians at the said school in a recent strike.
Separately, the IDF said that ground forces operating in Gaza have directed the Air Force to carry out some 5,000 strikes to “thwart threats in real time.”
Some 3,300 strikes were carried out by fighter jets, 860 by combat helicopters and more than 570 by drones, according to the IDF. It also noted that many of the airstrikes have taken place within a few hundred meters of ground forces, and some even closer than that.
It’s worth noting that 11,078 people had been killed in Israeli air and artillery strikes on Gaza since the war broke out on October 7, according to the Strip’s health ministry. At least 40% of the casualties were children.
The battle in Gaza City could drag on for days, if not weeks. In order to capture the city, the IDF will have to accept the fact that it will take heavy human and material losses.
