Late on January 20, rocket sirens sounded in Haifa and a blast from an interception was reported over the northern Israeli city.
Israel’s emergency medical service, Magen David Adom, stated that response teams had been dispatched to areas where rocket falls had been reported. The service added that it had received no reports of injuries.
Later, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that an interceptor missile was fired at “a suspicious target” over Haifa that the incident had concluded.
Earlier in the day, the IDF reported that it had identified a drone over the city of Acre, which is located just a few kilometers to the north of Haifa. The drone, which had allegedly crossed into Israel from Lebanon, was intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system.
The aerial infiltrations over Acre and later Haifa may have been caused by drones launched from Lebanon by Hezbollah on attack or just reconnaissance missions.
Another possibility is that the drones were launched by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which announced attacks on targets in Haifa and a gas rig off Israeli shores in the past. The group possess long-range suicide drones as well as cruise missiles.
The interceptions over Acre and Haifa show how Israel is facing growing threats as a result of its war on the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 24,000 Palestinians. Contrary to what the Israeli leadership is saying, the war is only weakening Israel’s deterrence.
