The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has intensified ground operations against the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.
On January 24 afternoon, the IDF released video footage of the Givati Brigade’s operations in Khan Younis over the past day. The Givati Brigade in recent days had carried out an offensive with other units of the 98th Division in southern Gaza, allegedly isolating Khan Younis from other areas in southern Gaza.
The IDF said that Givati troops killed several Hamas fighters during clashes in the city, as well as with tank shelling and airstrikes. The troops also raided several Hamas outposts there, locating caches of weapons.
The Air Force carried out a wide wave of airstrikes on Hamas targets in Khan Younis, before the Givati troops moved in. “The precise strikes prepare the conditions in the field for the ground forces,” the IDF said.
Amid the operation, the IDF said three Hamas fighters were spotted coming out of a building and moving toward the soldiers. The brigade directed an airstrike, killing the trio.
In a morning statement, the IDF said that the 98th Division is “increasing the pressure” on Hamas, while eliminating “many terror cells” with sniper fire, tank shelling and airstrikes.
Over the past day, the IDF said troops of the Commando Brigade carried out raids on Hamas sites in Khan Younis, where they encountered many Palestinian fighters, including squads planning to fire anti-tank missiles.
Also amid the operations in Khan Younis, the IDF said that the Givati Brigade directed airstrikes on two cells of Hamas gunmen; the 7th Armored Brigade raided a number of Hamas sites, where troops killed several fighters and seized weapons used by the group; and the Paratroopers Brigade killed “a large number” of fighters in a series of attacks.
Meanwhile, in central Gaza, the IDF said that reservists of the Yiftah Brigade spotted a Hamas fighter observing the troops from a building. The soldiers shelled the building, killing the operative. And in northern Gaza, the 215th Artillery Regiment directed several airstrikes, killing “many” fighters, according to the IDF.
Separately, the IDF released video footage of a one-kilometer tunnel that connects northern and southern Gaza. The tunnel was found by reservists of the 646th Brigade and combat engineers of the elite Yahalom unit, who later destroyed it.
The IDF’s recent operations in Khan Youns appear to be a reaction to the January 23 al-Maghazi attack in central Gaza, which claimed the lives of 23 Israeli troops. The complex attack was claimed by Hamas.
More than three months into the war in Gaza, Israel is yet to achieve any of its objectives. Hamas is still ruling the Strip, holding the Israeli hostages and maintaining its combat capabilities. Meanwhile, the death toll on the Palestinian side has exceeded 25,000. Most of the casualties were reportedly women and children.
