The Lebanese military said that a journalist was killed by Israeli gunfire late on October 19 in a southern Lebanon border area.
“A journalist team of seven people covering news … near the Israeli enemy’s al-Abad site outside the town of Hula, was targeted with machine guns by enemy [Israeli] troops, killing one and injuring another,” the Lebanese military said in a statement.
Earlier, peacekeepers with the United States Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said that one person had been killed after civilians were caught in clashes in southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese military asked them for help “for seven individuals stranded near” the border during “a significant exchange of fire”, UNIFIL, said in its statement. A spokesperson confirmed they were all civilians.
“Tragically, one person lost his life during this incident and the others were successfully rescued,” UNIFIL said, addin that they asked the Israeli forces to suspend fire “to facilitate the rescue operation” and they complied.
From its side, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said earlier that its troops had targeted Hezbollah infrastructure and struck three people who attempted to launch anti-tank guided missiles at Israeli positions.
When asked about the killing of the Journalist and the Lebanese military’s account, the IDF said that it was investigating the matter.
In a statement, Hezbollah’s Public Relations said that “the killing of civilians and the assault on the security of our country will not go unanswered.”
The incident came nearly a week after a Lebanese journalist working for Reuters was killed and other journalists injured in an Israeli strike on southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah attacked several sites of the IDF in the occupied Shebaa Farms and the Palestinian Hamas Movement launched a rocket attack from southern Lebanon at Israeli settlement in the Galilee on October 19. Israeli casualties were reported after the attack.
Clashes on the Lebanon front broke out just a day after the October 7 surprise attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip. Hezbollah and its allies will likely escalate their attacks on the front if the IDF launches an invasion into the Palestinian enclave.
