Israeli defense officials speculate that Hezbollah was not behind the rocket attack, rather Palestinian militant factions, per the Israeli daily Haaretz.
This was not the first such attack this year. During the Israeli attack on the Palestinian Gaza Strip last May, four rocket attacks from Lebanon targeted northern Israel. A fifth attack took place on July 20 following a series of Israeli strikes on the northern Syrian governorate of Aleppo.
The new attack may be related to the current escalation between Israel and Iran, which began following the July 30 drone attack on the MERCER STREET tanker in the Arabian Sea. The attack itself was reportedly a response to the July 21 Israeli strikes on the central Syrian governorate of Homs.
