On January 18, rocket sirens were sounded in Eilat and a large explosion was reported over the southernmost Israeli city.
Initially, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that an interceptor was fired at a “suspicious aerial target” that was heading toward Israeli airspace from the Red Sea. However, the IDF later announced a “false identification” triggered the sirens and the launch of the interceptor.
Videos showing the interception over Eilat were posted to social networks. There were no reports of casualties or material losses.
Eilat has been targeted with missiles and drones several times since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza, with the Yemeni Houthis (Ansar Allah) and the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, both backed by Iran, claiming responsibility for most of the attacks.
The only confirmed successful attack on Eilat was on November 9. At the time, the IDF said that the drone launched from Syria struck the city and retaliated with a series of strikes that killed seven fighters of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which is also backed by Iran.
While most of the attacks on Eilat were unsuccessful, the strategic port of the city was badly impacted by the Houthis’ recent attacks on Israel-affiliated ships in the Red Sea.
