On January 29, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it had foiled an infiltration attempt in the occupied Golan Heights from Syria’s direction.
In a statement, the army said that soldiers monitoring surveillance cameras spotted the two gunmen crossing the separation line with Syria and approaching Israel’s “security fence” near the settlement of Haspin.
“Soldiers were dispatched to the scene and opened fire in accordance with standard operating procedures,” the IDF said, adding that one of the gunmen was wounded.
The gunman was treated by military medics at the scene. However, he was declared dead shortly after. The second gunman apparently fled back to Syria. It was unclear if he had also been wounded by the IDF gunfire. No Israeli soldiers were wounded in the incident.
Early on in January, the IDF said that troops detained five suspects who crossed into Israeli-occupied territory from Syria. In December, two similar incidents were reported.
Israel has been working to improve defensive measures along the separation line with Syria. Earlier this week, the IDF removed an old minefield near the abandoned town of Shayta in the Golan Heights to pave a new road. The move was a blatant violation of the 1974 separation of forces agreement with Syria which prevents Israeli troops from operating within the 235 square kilometer buffer zone in al-Golan.
Syrian news sources are yet to provide any information about the new infiltration attempt. The IDF could use the alleged incident as an excuse to launch strikes against Syria.

Israel doesn’t have the population to invade Syria but they have good airforce and can attack many bases.
