A Hezbollah commander responsible for anti-tank guided missile fire on northern Israel was killed in a drone strike on August 7, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced.
In a statement, the IDF said that the commander Hassan Fares Jeshi was killed in a strike that targeted the southern Lebanese town of Jouaiyya.
Separately, Israeli fighter jets struck buildings belonging to Hezbollah in Aitaroun, according to the IDF. Video footage of the strikes were released.
Lebanese media reported that two people were killed and at least six others were wounded when an Israeli drone strike hit a motorcycle in Jouaiyya. Nevertheless, Hezbollah has not mourned any fighter so far, which casts some doubts on the IDF’s claims.
The strikes didn’t deter Hezbollah, which announced three attacks during the day. In separate statements, the group said that its fighters shelled the IDF border sites of al-Rahib, Jal al-Alam and al-Malikiyah “in support of the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and to support their valiant and honorable resistance.” No losses were reported by Hebrew media.
The latest attacks came as Israel is preparing for a possible response by Hezbollah to the assassination of the group’s senior commander Fuad Shukr in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
Hezbollah and its allies in Lebanon have been launching attacks against the IDF in support of the Hamas Movement and other factions in Gaza since the start of the Israeli war on the Strip last October.
So far, the border clashes have resulted in 25 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Golan as well as the deaths of at least 18 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 600 people have been killed, including 380 fighters of Hezbollah and over 100 civilians.
