The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on March 8 that it had seized weapons during several “targeted raids” in southern Syria.
The raids took place over the past week, the military said in a statement, adding that the seized weapons included rifles, ammunition, rockets, and other military gear.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported multiple Israeli incursions into southern Syria between March 3 and 6. Israeli troops collected weapons from the locals, inspected their homes and set up checkpoints during the incursions, according to the London-based monitoring group.

Israeli troops invaded the buffer zone adjacent to the occupied Golan Heights in the southern Syrian governorate of al-Qunitra just hours after the fall of the Assad regime on December 8. The IDF also launched hundreds of strikes destroying much of the country’s military capabilities, including warships, warplanes, ballistic missiles and air defense systems.
The IDF has described its presence in southern Syria’s buffer zone as a temporary and defensive measure. However, Defense Minister Israel Katz has said that troops will remain deployed to nine army posts in the area, including one atop the strategic Mount Hermon, “indefinitely.”
Last month, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that southern Syria must be completely demilitarized, warning that Israel would not accept the presence of the forces of the new Syrian Islamists government near its territory. The primer also warned the government against attacking the Druze, vowing to defend the minority.
The Syrian government has so far refrained from challenging Israel in any way. This led to criticism, especially from the more radical elements that played in the November-December offensive which saw the collapse of the regime of former president Bashar al-Assad. Repeated Israeli attacks on Syria could eventually lead to cracks within the governing body in Syria.

syria gets new cash shipment from russia in sign of warming ties the assad regime began paying russia to print its currency under a multi-million dollar contract agreed during the country’s 13-year civil war. the new arab staff & agencies 06 march, 2025 syria received a new shipment of its local currency printed in russia on wednesday with more consignments expected in the future, a syrian government official said, in a new sign of improving ties between moscow and syria’s new rulers.
the cash arrived via plane at damascus airport on wednesday and was taken by a convoy of several trucks to the central bank, according to a separate source familiar with the matter.
syria began paying russia to print its currency under a multi-million dollar contract during the 13-year-old syrian civil war, after damascus’ previous contract with a subsidiary of the austrian central bank was terminated due to european sanctions.
it is unclear if the arrangement is now continuing under the same terms. one source familiar with the contract said it was.
russia backed syrian autocrat bashar al-assad during the war, swaying the conflict with its bombardment of rebels including the islamist group hayat tahrir al-sham that ousted assad in a lightning offensive last year.
but russia quickly moved to maintain its ties with damascus in the weeks after assad fled to moscow, with an eye on keeping its two key bases in the country’s coastal region.a senior russian diplomat visited damascus in january and syrian president ahmed sharaa held a phone call with russian president vladimir putin on 12 february.

reuters could not determine exactly how much had arrived on wednesday, the second such shipment since assad was ousted on 8 december. the cash crunch has left syrian depositors struggling to use their savings and has piled pressure on local businesses who are already being squeezed by new competition from cheap imports as the protectionist economy is opened up by the new rulers.
