The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced early on September 27 that its air defenses had intercepted a ballistic missile that was launched from Yemen over the central city of Tel Aviv.

In a statement, the military said that the missile was downed “outside the country’s borders” by the Arrow long-range air defense system, adding that warning alerts were triggered in Tel Aviv and nearby area due to concerns about falling shrapnel from the interception.

Hebrew media didn’t report any direct impacts or damage from interception debris. Still, the Magen David Adom ambulance service said that a teenage girl was moderately hurt after being struck by a car pulling to the side of the road after the warning alerts went off.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, though the military spokesman for the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen, Brigade General Yahya Sarea, said on the X social network that the group would be making an announcement in the upcoming hours.

A Houthi official hinted that the attack was in retaliation for an Israeli strike that killed Hezbollah senior commander Mohammed Srur in the southern suburb of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on September 26.

The IDF, which described Srur as Hezbollah’s drone commander, said he was Hezbollah’s attaché to Yemen where he was involved in the Houthis’ aerial forces.

The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the United States and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea since last November in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down at least ten American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. Israel also launched an unprecedented attack against the Red Sea port of al-Hodeidah last July after a deadly Houthi drone strike on the city of Tel Aviv.

The strikes on Yemen, which have so far claimed the lives of more than 50 people, have failed to deter the Houthis or to degrade their military capablities.
