For the first time amid the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it had targeted a site which was used by Hezbollah’s drone units to launch first-person view (FPV) suicide quadcopter.
The site was one of six the military struck in the coastal town of Tyre and other areas of southern Lebanon over the past day.
Elsewhere in southern Lebanon, the IDF said that it struck armed rocket launchers, along with Hezbollah operatives in areas where the IDF is operating.
Since the start of the ceasefire — brokered by the United States — in April, Hezbollah’s drone units have been launching daily attacks using fiber optic-guided FPV suicide quadcopters, which are completely immune to jamming. The group even introduced nighttime capable drones with thermal imagers.
These drones inflicted heavy human and material losses on the IDF, and even restricted its freedom of movement to some extent in southern Lebanon.
In recent days, Hezbollah released videos showing four drone strikes that targeted three Merkava main battle tanks and a HEMTT fuel truck.
The IDF is reportedly working on a solution to the threat posed by Hezbollah’s fiber optic-guided FPV suicide quadcopters, but Israeli defense officials have cautioned that a system to counter such drones will not come soon, and will not provide complete protection.
For the time being, Israeli troops are using simple counter measures like mesh nets, and they are clearly not working out well.
