Late on March 18, at least one rocket was launched from the Palestinian Gaza Strip at the southern Israeli settlement of Nahal Oz.
Sirens were sounded in the settlement, which is located just a kilometer to the east of Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that the rocket landed in an open field, without causing any casualties or material losses.
According to the statement, the Iron Dome air defense system was not activated as the rocket was predicted to land in an unpopulated area.
The rocket attack came just two days after four Palestinians were killed by undercover officers from the elite Israeli police unit Yamam in the northern West Bank city of Jenin. One of the casualties was a member of the Hamas Movement, the de-facto ruler of Gaza, while another was a member of the second largest faction in the strip, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
None of Gaza’s factions has claimed responsibility for the rocket attack, so far. The IDF usually holds Hamas responsible for any attack from the strip and responds by targeting positions of the movement’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.
Israeli operations in the West Bank provoked Palestinian factions in Gaza on multiple occasions in the last few months. At least 36 rockets have been reportedly launched from the strip since January.
Despite this, neither the IDF or Palestinian factions appear to be interested in a full-blown military confrontation, at least for the time being.
