The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has taken its first casualty in Gaza City, right after expanding its major offensive there with a third division.
On September 21, the IDF announced that it had deployed the additional division, the 36th, to back the 162nd and 98th divisions which has been operating in Gaza City since the start of the offensive there, codenamed “Operation Gideon’s Chariots B”.
The military announced the very next day that one of its officers was severely wounded in a fire fight with Hamas fighters there.
The officer, a company commander in the Givati Infantry Brigade’s Shaked Battalion, was wounded while pursuing a group of three Hamas fighters, the IDF said, adding that all the fighters were later killed by Givati troops and tank shelling by the 401st Brigade. Video footage showing the firefight was released.
The IDF continued to launch strikes throughout the day. It said that one of the strikes killed Iyad Abu Yusuf, the deputy commander of Hamas’s naval police.
According to Al-Jazeera, Israeli fires claimed the lives of 37 Palestinians during the day, including 30 in Gaza City. Seven of those killed in the city were the victims of a single strike that destroyed a residential building in the central area of Samer.
It’s worth noting that more than half of one million Palestinians who were living in Gaza City have already left, according to the IDF’s own estimates.
Separately, it was reported by Fox News and The Times of Israel on September 22 that Hamas wrote a letter to United States President Donald Trump requesting that he guarantee a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza in exchange for releasing half of the hostages it is holding. According to the reports, the letter is currently being held by Qatar and will be handed over to Trump later in the week.
Israel’s Channel 12 news reported from its side that Hamas has not signed the letter yet, but may do so in the coming days.
The offer is not in line with the declared goals of Israel, which include the release of all hostages. However, pressure from Trump could force Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept the offer. This would provide some relief to more than two millions in Gaza reeling under bombardment and famine, but won’t end the war, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 65,000 Palestinians.
