According to the IDF, the commander visited positions usually used by Hezbollah fighters. The Israeli side also claimed that Maj. Gen. Assad met with Haj Hashem, a commander of the Lebanese group’s units in southern Syria.
Avichay Adraee, a spokesman for the IDF, accused Hezbollah of working to establish a sabotage network in southern Syria. The spokesman claimed that Damascus is facilitating and supporting these efforts.
“The Syrian regime is and will remain responsible of any hostile activity that could be launched from its territory … forewarned is forearmed,” Lt. Col. Adraee said.
More than a year ago, Israel revealed an alleged master plan of Hezbollah to establish a network of operatives in the Syrian-held part of the Golan Heights in order to conduct operations against Israel.
At first Tell Aviv said the network was being established without the knowledge of the Damascus government. Now, it has changed the narrative claiming that Damascus is supporting Hezbollah’s plan.
Over the past year, several Israeli strikes targeted positions and personnel allegedly involved in Hezbollah’s network in southern Syria. However, no attacks have been carried out against Israel from there, thus far.
