On February 20, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it had withdrawn its last reserve brigade from the Gaza Strip, the 646th Brigade.
Troops of the reserve paratroopers brigade first operated in central Gaza and then in Khan Younis in the south in the past months, killing numerous Hamas fighters, locating weapons, and destroying tunnels, the IDF said in a statement.
The IDF has been withdrawing much of its reservist forces from the Gaza Strip in recent weeks, leaving the standing army to continue the fighting against Hamas.
Citing Israeli military officials, The Times of Israel said that the IDF aims to release reservists to help bounce back the country’s economy and give them a break before they are likely called up again, as the fighting in Gaza is expected to last all year.
The IDF’s main offensive in Khan Younis is also close to being wrapped up, although no exact date for its end has been decided, according to the military officials.
The officials alleged that Hamas battalions in the city were dismantled. However, the faction and its allies are still reporting attacks there.
The withdrawal of the 646th Brigade and the preparations to end the offensive in Khan Younis came as Israeli losses in Gaza continue to grow.
The IDF announced the death of three Staff Sergeants between February 19-21, one from the Paratroopers Brigade’s 202nd Battalion, a second from the reconnaissance unit of the same brigade and another from the Nahal Brigade’s 932nd Battalion.
Their death has brought the toll of Israeli troops killed since the start of ground operations in Gaza to 237. More than 1,300 have been reportedly wounded.

While recent developments may indicate that Israel is giving up on its war, the IDF is in fact preparing for a large-scale offensive in the southern Gaza area of Rafah, which is located right on the border with Egypt. More than a million Palestinains have been taking shelter there.
An Israeli attack on Rafah could lead to a significant increase in the number of Palestinian casualties, which has already exceeded 29,000.
