On July 25, the artillery of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) shelled the countryside of the Syrian governorate of al-Quneitra from the occupied Golan Heights.
The artillery strikes hit positions of Syrian security forces near the town of al-Qahtaniya, which is located near the main frontline. No casualties were reported as a result of the shelling.
In a statement, an unnamed source in the Syrian Foreign Ministry condemned the shelling, calling it a violation of the 1974 separation of forces agreement, an attack on international legitimacy and evidence of Israel’s attempts to spread chaos in the region.
“It is the duty of the international community to move with all seriousness to put an end to these attacks and to oblige the Zionist enemy with international laws,” the diplomatic source was quoted by the official Syrian Arab News Agency as saying.
Israel didn’t comment on the shelling. The IDF carried out several direct fire attacks and ground intrusions into al-Quneitra in the past to limit the movements of Syrian government forces and alleged members of Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
Last April, the IDF launched two waves of strikes with artillery and missiles against military posts in the countryside of al-Quneitra after a rare rocket attack on the occupied Golan Heights.
Israel claims that Hezbollah is working to establish a network of cells in Syria’s southern region to launch attacks against its territory.
