Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant had held a number of meetings due to unspecified “security incidents,” the minister’s office announced on March 14.
Gallant’s office said in a statement that the meetings were held on March 13 with top defense and security officials, including military chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, the head of the Shin Bet, Ronen Bar, the head of the Israel Defense Forces’ Operations Directorate, Major General Oded Basiuk, and the head of Military Intelligence, Major General Aharon Haliva.
During the meetings, the officials presented the defense minister with “preliminary findings from the investigation of the incidents.”
“The defense minister instructed to continue efforts to ensure the daily routine of Israeli citizens,” the statement added, without providing any details on the security incidents.
On March 15, Gallant briefed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the recent unspecified security developments. As a result, Netanyahu decided to shorten a pre-scheduled visit to Germany.
The reports about unspecified security incidents came a day after a mysterious explosion seriously wounded a man on a highway in northern Israel.
The bombing took place on the Route 65 highway at the Megiddo Junction. 21-year-old Shareef ad-Din from the Arab village of Salem, was seriously wounded in the suspected attack. An advanced, large bomb was reportedly used in the attack.
In the last few months, Palestinians carried out a series of attacks in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, some of which included the use of improvised explosive devices. The attacks were a response to repeated Israeli operations and raids in Palestinian areas.
It is still unclear if the reported security incidents are related to the current Palestinian-Israeli tensions. Tel Aviv will reportedly provide some details soon.
