A drone strike hit a vehicle in the southern Lebanese town of Borj el-Mlouk on March 15, with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claiming responsibility.
Initially, Lebanese media reported that two people lost their lives in the strike. However, a report released later on by the country’s official National News Agency said that a single man was killed. The slain man was said to be from the town of Kfarkela, a stronghold of Hezbollah.
From its side, the IDF said in a brief statement that the strike targeted a Hezbollah operative who was “engaged in terror activity.”
A ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S. last November was supposed to end all clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border by February 18. However, the IDF continues to operate against Hezbollah under the pretext of neutralizing threats to Israel security. The group went into the conflict with Israel more than 14 months ago to support the Gaza Strip and took heavy losses.
In addition to its repeated strikes, the IDF refuses to withdraw from five strategic posts it recently established in southern Lebanon.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on March 14 that the IDF would remain deployed at five strategic points in southern Lebanon “indefinitely.” The minister also instructed the military to fortify the positions and prepare to stay there for a long period.
Hezbollah, which appears to be exercising strategic patience, has so far refrained from responding to Israeli violations in any way. The group will not likely change this stance any time soon.
