A few moments ago, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) finally released an official comment on the incident with a Russian IL-20 plane off Syrian coast.
The statement came after Russian Defense Ministery Sergei Shoigu stated that Israel bears full responsibility for the downning of IL-20 because its actions had led to this situation. Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Israeli warplanes used the IL-20 to hide from Syrian air defense fire during the September 17 Israeli strike on targets in the war-torn country.
So, the IDF expressed sorrow “for the death of the aircrew members of the Russian plane” and claimed that Syria, Iran and Hezbollah are the sides responsible for the incident.
Israel also holds Iran and the Hezbollah terror organization accountable for this unfortunate incident.

Furthermore, the IDF contested the version of the events provided by the Russian Defense Ministry. According to the IDF, Israeli warplanes were “within Israeli airspace” when Syrian forces launched anti-aircraft missiles.

As to the strike on Syria itself, the IDF claimed that the strikes were aimed at “a facility of the Syrian Armed Forces from which systems to manufacture accurate and lethal weapons were about to be transferred on behalf of Iran to Hezbollah in Lebanon.”
Israel will share all the relevant information with the Russian Government to review the incident and to confirm the facts in this inquiry.

Attacking another country because of the manufacture and sharing of defense material with a third party does not constitute an attack against Israel. No one in Syria or Lebanon is currently engaged in using weapons against Israel. So, killing people on the ground, attacking civilian objects and shutting down the power reaches the level of aggressive war as defined by the Nuremberg Tribunal. But Russia is also responsible for the deaths of it’s own citizens here. One does not deploy forces to a country to help said country fend off an ongoing assault but also then allow any other tom, dick or harry to fly into the joint operating area and attack forces aligned with you, most namely the forces of the state being assaulted. It’s seen as weak and accommodating and this time led to missiles being launched and flying right around two major Russian defense bases. In a properly planned military operation the aircraft of other military powers should not be red carpeted right into the theatre and all up in your business. They should be intercepted and warned off or fired at from a distance. USSR/Russia did have IFF since 1963, but with the coming down of the wall they where fully compromised. I think NATO deliberately targeted this aircraft, as a message to the Russian leadership. They used the Syrian AA as a possible get out for all sides, but the attacks by Israel were already taking place close to Russian forces at their air and sea base. That alone is an escalation by Israel.

This deal with Erdogan is better than I thought, as the Russian army will enter Idlib in large numbers escorted by the Turkish army without even having ot fight any battles at all. This is why Israel downed the Russian military transport plane to try to wreck this deal which is huge victory for Syria.
It also helps Russia and Syria by Erdogan is giving them a shield to free the rural areas of Latakia Idlib and Homs which they would have to do first any way. The Oct 15 deadline gives the Russians plenty of time to bomb the crap out of the militants. The buffer zone will also be territory Syria won’t have to fight for as the Israeli terrorists will have to pull back and Russia has more time to greatly strengthen Syrian air defenses. The fact that Israel attacked today in Latakia in a temper tantrum proves this was a good deal to make for Syria. If the militants don’t cooperate, they get hammered anyway. Nothing to lose. A very smart move by Putin again as well as Erdogan. I am sure China is helping financially by helping Turkey out with USSA Israeli sanctions and to get out from under the IMF
Putin made a deal–with Erdogan, who is just going to keep it?! Erdy broke the previous deal, which entailed reining in HTS in Idlib. And this was at a time when Russia looked as if it was at least trying. With Russia in retreat mode, and the full force of the US Navy off the coast, Erdogan just told Putin what the latter wanted to hear. With the liberation of Idlib called off, Russia has no way of enforcing what happens there. Already, jihadist formations are being fortified and re-armed. If Turkey and the US are smart (not a given), they’ll use these developments to kiss and make up; in that case, how long before US special forces show up? Then Syria can say bye-bye to Idlib forever, and Aleppo will permanently remain in the cross-hairs of the moderates.
Putin’s deal as I understand it was for joint Russian and Turkish troops to enforce the clearing of the demilitarized zone. So the jihadists unlikely to comply will be Al Qaeda. Erdogan has the paychecks of his TIP jihadists to enforce compliance. Therefore effectively separating the forces. Qaeda will be facing Russian and Turkish forces and will be cleared or moved back. Erdogan may not be brilliant, but I doubt he is dumb enough to “kiss and make up” with the US, they would have him “gone” in a heartbeat. My guess is that zone will open the M5 hi-way, a big plus.
We will see of course, but I just can’t share your optimism here. At the hour of truth, Turkey; supports HTS. And which Russian troops? They can muster some mil police to patrol an area that’s already liberated, but the serious ground force on their side is the SAA only. With Russia making such fools of themselves, I’m afraid that any of its troops entering Idlib will quickly become IED and sniper fodder.
