On July 11 morning, the Israeli military killed a fighter of the Hamas Movement who was stationed in a defensive position along the separation line around the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian movement confirmed the incident in an official press release and identified the dead fighter as Jabalia native 28-year old Mahmoud Ahmed al-Adham.
“The occupation deliberately shot one of our Mujahideen while he was carrying out his duty in the border protection force. We are examining and assessing this crime. We stress that it will not pass unnoticed, the enemy will bear the consequences of this criminal act,” Hama’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, said in the press release.
Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that al-Adham died of his wounds and revealed was shot east of Beit Hanoun in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.

In what appears to be an attempt to de-escalate the situation, the Israeli military said that its forces killed al-Adham due to a “misidentification.”
“Israel Defense Forces troops arrived at the scene and identified the Hamas member as an armed terrorist. They carried out a shooting that stemmed from a misunderstanding. The incident will be investigated,” the Israeli military said, according to Haaretz.
Following the incident, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel prefers to “maintain the tranquility” around the Gaza Strip. However, he warned that Tel Aviv is preparing a military solution.
“We are preparing for the offensive side and the campaign is not only going to be broad, but also surprising … I will not hesitate to do what is necessary, and electoral considerations do not guide me,” the Israeli PM said during a visit to Ashkelon, according to the Jerusalem post.
Netanyahu’s statements were likely an attempt to intimidate Hamas, that appears to be determined to respond to the unjustified killing of its fighter.
