On August 5, a Tel Aviv municipal patrol officer was killed in a shooting attack that was carried out by a member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).
The attack took place at a corner between Tel Aviv’s Montefiore and Nachalat Binyamin streets, where dozens of restaurants, cafes and bars are located.
Two of the municipal patrol officers approached the attacker who was standing at the corner. The attacker initially refused to answer their calls, and as the pair got off their motorcycles, the Palestinian man pulled out a handgun and opened fire, hitting one of the patrolmen.
The officer, later identified as 42-year-old Chen Amir, was critically hurt after being shot in the head. He was taken to the nearby Ichilov Hospital, where medical officials declared his death.
The second officer returned fire hitting the attacker who was also taken to the Ichilov Hospital, which later declared his death.
The Palestinian gunman was identified by the Shin Bet security agency as 22-years-old Kamel Abu Bakr, a member of the PIJ and a resident of Rummanah village in the West Bank. According to the Shin Bet, Abu Bakr had been hiding in the Jenin refugee camp for the past six months. He had been wanted by Israeli security forces for opening fire at Israeli troops in the occupied region.
An Israeli police commissioner told Hebrew media at the scene that the attacker had a “martyrdom” letter on him, adding that “he came to be a martyr.”
The PIJ praised the attack in Tel Aviv, calling it in a statement a “natural and legitimate response to the crimes of the occupation.”
The deadly shooting in Tel Aviv was the latest in a string of attacks by Palestinisns in Israel and the West Bank which have left 26 people dead and several others seriously wounded since the beginning of the year. During the same period, 164 West Bank Palestinians were killed by Israeli troops during raids and security operations.
