On the night of October 16, the mop up operations continued in various Israeli settlements, including the southern city of Ofakim. During another security operation in the city, Israeli soldiers mistakenly killed the local civilian.
While searching for a group of Palestinian militants, Israeli soldiers shot and killed an armed Jewish settler, whom they mistook for a Hamas militant.
After Hamas launched attacks on Israeli territory, Israeli authorities decided to arm the population and distribute weapons to civilians. According to Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, any citizen who meets the criteria for owning firearms and does not have a criminal or medical history will be able to obtain a permit to own firearms within a week through a telephone interview.
However, videos from the Israeli streets showed that it was much easier to receive weapons.
Thus, the authorities’ decision to distribute weapons to civilians living in the border zone to the Gaza Strip has already led to tragedy and was fatal for at one of the civilians.
