An Israeli reserve soldier seriously wounded while fighting in southern Lebanon two weeks ago succumbed to his wounds, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on November 8.
The slain soldier was identified by the IDF as Master Sergeant Guy Shabtay, 39, of the Alon Brigade’s 8207th Battalion, from Jerusalem.
According to a statement released by the IDF, Shabtay was seriously wounded in a firefight with Hezbollah fighters in a town in southern Lebanon on October 26, in an incident in which five other reservists were killed and over a dozen were wounded.
Shabtay’s death brought the number of Israeli troops slain since the beginning of ground operations in southern Lebanon to 48.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, with Hezbollah launching attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel stepped up its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 27 it assassinated the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nassrallah.
On September 30, the IDF escalated even further by launching a limited ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
All in all, the confrontation has so far resulted in 41 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as well as the deaths of at least 63 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 3,100 people have been killed, including more than 500 members of Hezbollah.
