An Israeli soldier was killed and several others were wounded by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during a raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern part of the occupied Palestinian West Bank.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched the raid overnight with the aim of capturing or killing alleged members of the Hamas Movement in Jenin.
According to an initial IDF probe, a Panther armored personnel carrier (APC) used by a medical force was hit by an IED planted under a road in Jenin during the raid.
The blast slightly wounded the soldiers inside the APC. As additional forces reached the scene and worked to evacuate the wounded soldiers, another IED exploded, leading to the death of a soldier and the injury of additional troops.
The slain soldier was identified by the IDF as a sniper team commander in the Haruv reconnaissance unit of the Kfir Brigade.
A total of 16 Israeli troops were wounded by the IEDs, one seriously, five moderately and the rest lightly. The slain soldier and the more seriously wounded were all outside of their APC when the second IED went off, according to the IDF’s initial probe
Before the APC drove along the road where the attack took place, aD9 armored bulldozer and backhoe of the IDF scraped the road to uncover any potential IEDs. Still, the two IEDs that caused the casualties were not discovered. The IDF believes that they were planted much deeper in the ground than usual, around a meter and a half below ground. Normally, such devices are buried a few dozen centimeters under roads.
During the IDF raid, both the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, and the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, reported that their fighters were clashing with Israeli troops in Jenin.
The deadly clashes in Jenin came amid Israel’s war against Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip.
The IDF stepped up operations throughout the West Bank after the start of the war in Gaza, killing at least 516 Palestinians and wounding 4,800 others. Hundreds of Palestinians were also arrested. Still, the security situation in Israel is only getting worse.
